Prime Minister Mark Carney has introduced an ambitious Housing Action Plan designed to tackle housing affordability through multiple avenues:​

  • Accelerated Home Construction: The plan aims to build more than 100,000 new homes across Canada by cutting red tape and incentivizing cities to expedite housing projects. This includes a $4 billion Housing Accelerator Fund targeting the creation of 100,000 new middle-class homes by 2024-25.

  • Financial Incentives for Builders and Buyers: To stimulate the construction of rental housing, the Liberals propose removing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from new rental developments, including co-operative housing corporations that provide long-term rentals. Additionally, they plan to unlock low-cost financing for rental construction to build up to 30,000 more homes per year.

  • Support for First-Time Homebuyers: The introduction of a Tax-Free First-Home Savings Account will allow prospective buyers to save more efficiently. The plan also includes doubling the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit and supporting rent-to-own projects to facilitate the transition from renting to owning.
